We stayed at this hotel last summer as a family, but also for my husband's business convention. There is a huge convention hall under the hotel where various company hosted their events. The hotel is just steps from the Magnificent Mile world famous shopping and cultural district. We managed to walk nearly everywhere on this trip, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Michigan Ave, etc. We are heavy walkers as it is so it wasn't a problem for us, but it might be a bit much for other people. and to be honest, we did take taxi rides back from the aquarium and the Navy Pier. Although it is right downtown and not far from anything!
If you go down to the convention area there is a portion of the Chicago Pedway, which allows you to walk between buildings and not have to cross a single street in the general area of the hotel. This was very convenient as we had our 5 month old son with us. Underground there was a food court with about 5 or 6 different places to eat, a drugstore (CVS?) and a few other shops as well.
The hotel was nice and clean. We had a view of a side street, so nothing impressive. Some rooms overlook the Navy Pier and other iconic Chicago locales. It had just undergone a major renovation before we arrived. Lots of modern styles and lighting.

They supplied us with a white metal crib, sheets, and a baby pack that included lotion, Johnson's baby shampoo, powder, and a few other items for my son. There were a few restaurants on property as well as a quick service shop with grab and go meals, coffee, and snacks. I wouldn't necessarily call this a family friendly hotel, as there weren't many amenities that were conducive to entertaining little kids. It definitely had a "business" vibe. It worked for us because the convention was there!
